The Rev. Leroy Ricksy founded the Booker T. Washington Learning Center as an after-school program in East Harlem in 1987. Since that time, a licensed pre-school, a Saturday enrichment program, a full-day summer program and an adult education program that focuses on computer skills and general literacy have all been added. The program has expanded to 114 children that are now in the Learning Center and more than 30 adults have graduated from the adult literacy program in the past year. Each program has a waiting list and plans are underway to expand the physical facilities while continuing to enhance the programs. The successes of these programs are based on a commitment to academic excellence and intensive attention to social interaction and cultural enrichment. A small staff assisted by many volunteers leads the work. |
