Volunteering in Programs Funded by Heart & Soul
Hundreds of volunteers work year-round for the various programs funded by Heart & Soul. Recently, Ashley Garrett, a new member of the Heart & Soul Board talked about her experiences serving in the program that provides nutritious lunches each Friday to disadvantaged guests.
"During the past 12 years as a volunteer at the Friday Soup Kitchen, I have set tables, bought aprons, prepared sandwiches, made coffee and poured juice. All of it has been fabulous - but the best part has been interacting with our guests and the other volunteers.
“After all of this time at the Soup Kitchen, I have discovered one thing that is universal in everyone - this intense need to create a personal connection. It is an amazing thing to witness and it happens at all different ages. It is the kindergartener who, after working on a group soup kitchen project with her class, brought in $4.00 of her own money to donate to us. It is an older guest who spends time talking to his young waiter - a boy from PS 79. It is a group of North Carolina high school students who traveled al the way to New York City to perform for us on hand bells. Volunteering is a great way to create a personal connection.
And, volunteering can start anytime - at 5 or at 70. I know; I've seen it happen."
